Find Your Focus and Choose a One Word New Year Resolution

This time last year I posted about my decision to forgo the basic “I’m going to lose weight” New Year’s resolution. Instead, I opted for the trend of choosing one word to attempt to focus on for the year and see I could be more successful in keeping to this type of change for 2019. Today I’m going to tell you about my experience in setting a yearly focus word and share over 100 ideas to help you find your own focus word for the New Year.

The amount of years that I chose a resolution to change something about myself and then failed at doing so is approximately 25. There have been a few years that I succeeded in doing what I pledged. For example, there was the year that I quit smoking for real and that was a big one! And one year I did actually join a gym and lose weight (although I don’t use my membership now and I’ve gained most of that weight back.) I still count it as a success because I did complete the goal. Another year I wanted to be healthy enough to run a marathon and beat my PR and I DID IT. So yeah, some resolutions have stuck.

Happiness = "Your package has shipped"

The majority of my resolutions never did stick though. I failed at goals like : Keeping my house clean, completing a 365 photo project, completing a 52 week photo project, giving up coffee, etc.

As I said in my last post about resolutions, when you fail at keeping them it just doesn’t do much for your positive for your self esteem. You already knew you needed to improve an area and you pledged to it but it fell through. So then you feel like a super loser. It sucks!

But wait – Focus Word is to the rescue! With a focus word you aren’t pledging to do anything that is absolute (like lose 50 pounds.) You simply choose an area of your life that needs to approve and select one word to focus on through out the year to help guide you toward your ultimate goal.

Last year I chose the word Intentional because I wanted to feel like I had fully been present for more moments of my life rather than constantly running a day short. That meant that I had to consciously make myself aware and account for all the time I spent using up the minutes of my day. I started with adding a phone wall paper to my phone to remind me of my focus word and when I wrote about it a week in, it was working. You can download that wallpaper for free at the link above.

Well here I am a year later talking about it again so you must have already figured out that it worked well for me. I can honestly say that the things that have changed since I chose my word of Intentional include spending the pleasant change of spending very little time on Facebook (which was a big problem for me), buying less things that I won’t really use, having more time to use toward actually working on my goals and finally feeling like I spent more time WELL. So I love this tradition!

The word that I’m choosing for the year is Action. I’ve said before that I do a lot of planning and replanning things I want and need to do. Procrastination is a huge personality flaw for me. I need to put that behind me and DO, WRITE, MAKE, etc.

You probably have a totally different need in your life. You might need to work less. You might need to let go of something. Maybe you need to love yourself. You may really need to exercise or stop smoking or heal another addiction. Whatever it is you need to do, there’s one word you can choose to remind yourself to try harder to move in that direction.

I’ve created a list of what I think are the best and most helpful words for you to help you choose your own focus word for the new year. Or, if you’re a real go getter then maybe choose a new word from this list every month and work toward a bunch of different goals!
