New beginnings are one of my favorite things. There’s so much excitement in looking forward to what’s to come. The idea of shedding old habits and failures and starting fresh has always made me feel hopeful. I’ve written about that several times on this blog over the years. Most recently I shared the blog post 100 Ideas To Choose Your Focus Word for the new year.
This week I’m sharing my own 2020 Top 20 as well as a bucket list goal planning worksheet. You can grab the fun printable page for free when you become a site pal by becoming an email subscriber. There should be a link at the bottom and the top of this page if you want to jump straight to that.
Why We Need Goals
Girls, you gotta focus. If you don’t then you’ll do like me the first half of my 40: get busy, accomplish little wake up old and it will feel like you managed to sleepwalk right through life.Girls, you gotta focus. Studies have shown that having a goal to pursue helps you to become more successful all around. Having a goal list jotted down somewhere, like in your planner, helps to keep you in check when you start to slack on achieving your dreams. A goal list becomes a map for your life and helps ensure you’ll get to where you want to be. Plus, if you’re planner obsessed like I am then you’re just looking for something else to print and stick in there. Ha!
Do More. Live Better.
Another reason that I like goal planning is that it helps you know yourself better. Knowing what your why is and having goals gives your life purpose and meaning (which are two things we need to live a happier life.) Timothy A Pychyl Ph.D., director of the Centre for Initiatives in Education and faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada) says that “Progress on our goals leads to more positive emotions and more satisfaction with life. It increases our well being.”

Did you know that giving up on a goal actually has a physical and negative effect on your mind and body? Research says it increases the stress hormone cortisol in the body that is responsible for causing health problems like increased blood pressure and even infertility.
Goal-oriented people who feel like they have a purpose in life actually live longer according to a publication, Purpose in Life as a Predictor of Mortality across Adulthood by Patrick L. Hill and Nicholas A. Turiano. The study showed an average increased life span of 14 years for people who strongly agreed to the statement, “Some people wander aimlessly through life, but I am not one of them”. That’s a pretty impressive reason to Find Your Purpose.
What I Want
This year I want to have a better existence. I’ve been through so much in the last years that my spirit just needs a break from the hardness of life. I want to feel more at peace and I especially want to feel more accomplished. I feel the need to know that I’m achieving the things I feel that I was created to do.

So this year I’ve decided that I want to:
Go somewhere new; learn to knit; hear ocean waves, read printed books, make a difference, see my family more often, feel energetic, think peaceful thoughts, build my email list, show more kindness, do all the things, grow strawberries, use my gifts, finish my shop updates, stop losing direction, say what God wants, complete my home decor, change my sleep habits, visit the beach and be healthier.
PHEW – that was a lot! Surely I’ll accomplish SOMETHING this year if I stick to this list, right? LOL
